Teaser Tuesday – June 12, 2018

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme hosted by The Purple Booker.

It is very easy to play along:

• Grab your current read and open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS!
• Share the title & author, too, so that other participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Here are my “teasers” :

She tried to understand how it was that her mother had handed her own child off to this criminal. She’d walked her to the bus depot, delivered her to him like a gift. But the even greater mystery, she thought, was Sally herself. What on earth would have made her agree to go with him, this fiend?

From the novel:

Rust & Stardust by T. Greenwood

Rust & Stardust

Expected publication: August 7, 2018 by St. Martin’s Press

.
Goodreads Description:

Camden, NJ, 1948. When 11 year-old Sally Horner steals a notebook from the local Woolworth’s, she has no way of knowing that 52 year-old Frank LaSalle, fresh out of prison, is watching her, preparing to make his move. Accosting her outside the store, Frank convinces Sally that he’s an FBI agent who can have her arrested in a minute―unless she does as he says.

This chilling novel traces the next two harrowing years as Frank mentally and physically assaults Sally while the two of them travel westward from Camden to San Jose, forever altering not only her life, but the lives of her family, friends, and those she meets along the way.

Based on the experiences of real-life kidnapping victim Sally Horner and her captor, whose story shocked the nation and inspired Vladimir Nabokov to write his controversial and iconic Lolita.

My Thoughts:

I’ve only read the first couple of chapters, but I’m hooked. I can tell this is going to be a very emotional read. I’m going to have a hard time putting this one down….
