Music Monday : Kate Bush – This Woman’s Work

musicmonday

Music Monday is a meme that was created by Drew from The Tattooed Book Geek. You pick a song and/or video and share it on Monday. I have really been enjoying the songs that Drew and everyone else has been sharing. I love books but music is another passion of mine. I love almost all genres of music, and it’s not unheard of for me to have Metallica, Taylor Swift, and Garth Brooks on the same playlist.

The song I’m sharing today is one of my favorites but it’s one that always makes me cry. I first heard it in an episode of Party of Five, a popular 90s TV show. It was a very emotional episode and had me in tears. But I loved it and had to find out what the song was.  This was back before you could ask your phone what the song was. Luckily I had taped the episode (on my VCR!!) and so I phoned a local radio station and played the clip for him. The DJ was a great guy. He recognized Kate Bush’s voice and then figured out that it was the song – This Woman’s Work.

When a friend of mine was badly injured in a house fire a few years later, I listened to this song over and over. Even though I knew she couldn’t hear it, I phoned the radio station over and over and asked them to play it and dedicate it to my friend. Unfortunately my friend succumbed to her injuries and passed away a few days later.  Now whenever I hear this song I think of my friend, Debbie.

Kate Bush – This Woman’s Work

Pray God you can cope
I stand outside this woman’s work
This woman’s world
Ooh, it’s hard on the man
Now his part is over
Now starts the craft of the father
I know you’ve got a little life in you yet
I know you’ve got a lot of strength left
I know you’ve got a little life in you yet
I know you’ve got a lot of strength left
I should be crying, but I just can’t let it show
I should be hoping, but I can’t stop thinking
Of all the things I should’ve said
That I never said
All the things we should’ve done
Though we never did
All the things I should’ve given
But I didn’t
Oh, darling, make it go
Make it go away
Give me these moments back
Give them back to me
Give me that little kiss
Give me your hand
I should be crying, but I just can’t let it show
I should be hoping, but I can’t stop thinking
Of all the things we should’ve said
That we never said
All the things we should’ve done
Though we never did
All the things that you needed from me
All the things that you wanted for me
All the things that I should’ve given
But I didn’t
Oh, darling, make it go away
Just make it go away now

  1. This post made me feel old. Party of Five and VCR’s, good grief 😂

I could never quite get into Kate’s music. My dad liked her stuff though.

Sorry to hear about your friend. I like that you can still listen to the song, even if it makes you cry 😘

    • Doesn’t it feel like yesterday in a way? Remember Beta-max from before VCRs? When we wanted to find out what a song was we had to jump through hoops. It still thrills me that I can hear a song now and just ask my phone to listen and tell me what the song is lol. I wasn’t a huge fan but there were a few songs that I just loved 🙂
And yes although it makes me cry and reminds me of my friend, I try to remember the good times we had ❤

  2. Oh lovely Deanna,

You know Kate Bush is from Eltham – where I was born and live? We have a local bench engraved with her name and her property behind gates – Wuthering Heights – is nearby, although she no longer lives there xx

  3. This story touched me. I hadn’t heard this song in so long, but had to find it after reading. Talk about old, I owned it on cassette. It was on the soundtrack of a Kevin Bacon movie, played during an emotional part. Always loved it.
